Born and raised in Vietnam, Katy Ho grew up in the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh City. Her first job was training shipment and transportation procedures for container terminal operations, where she helped distribute cargo all around the world. As Katy’s role evolved, she provided logistics solutions for distribution programs and helped coordinate exporting shipments from Vietnam to retailers and wholesalers in different countries. This experience accelerated her interest in the methodologies behind data analytics. On August 1st of 2019, Katy moved to the United States to further her education at Alliant International University in San Diego where she received her Masters in Science for Data Analytics. Upon her graduation, Katy pursued her passion for data analytics and started her role as MK Decision's Business Analyst.
How was the transition moving from Vietnam to San Diego?
At first, it was very uncomfortable. For the first 27 years of my life, I lived in Vietnam with my family. This was the first time I moved away from my family; it was a huge transition. My mom cried a lot when I moved. Once I started working for MK, I felt independent. Now I can support myself and my family. The sky is brighter, and I enjoy life more.
How do you like San Diego?
I love the beach and the vibe here; everyone is so friendly. We are surrounded by nature and have lots of places to go hiking. Besides engaging in outdoor activities, I spend time learning new things and reading.
Growing up, who had the most influence on you?
Tough question, but my greatest influence would be my mom. She has struggled her whole life, but never ceases to have an incredible work ethic; she is brave, strong, and independent. I like to think I am a lot like my mom. I would also like to mention my boyfriend. He accompanied me through some tough and lonely times in the US. He gave me a tour of beautiful California and continuously inspires me to pursue self-development.
What do you like to do on the weekends?
I enjoy traveling, camping, exploring national parks around the United States, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, drawing, reading, drinking IPAs, and eating specialized foods.
What gets you out of bed in the morning?
I have personal goals for myself that I write down and prioritize. I like to come up with short and long-term goals. Without goals, I feel lost. Anytime I have a goal, I write it down and evaluate my progress regularly.
What inspired you to pursue a career in data analytics?
I live by the saying, “do what you love and the money will follow.” Overall, I love my job and feel excited that it aligns with my career goals.
What attracted you to the financial tech industry?
At my first job, I was introduced to technology and decided to learn more about data analytics. After finishing my Master's, I was looking for career opportunities and was intrigued by MK’s Business Analyst role. While I did not anticipate a career in FinTech, once I met the MK team, I was very excited and interested in their technology and systems. I truly love my job.
When did you start with MK?
In January of 2021, I was hired as MK’s business analyst, where I started writing business process stories and conducting gap analyses. Later on, I standardized processes for MK’s Core Product Development by creating catalogs, naming conventions, and corresponding product documentation. My previous experience working with large corporations exposed me to standardized documentation. I leveraged these experiences to influence MK’s operations.
What are some of your responsibilities as a business analyst?
My role consists of creating documentation for APIs, business process stories, and user training manuals. I also assemble documentation templates and user experience diagrams, conduct gap and overlap analyses, perform data mapping, and organize MK’s products in feature, rules, and integration catalogs.
How would you describe your job to a child?
I show people how to build a house from lego blocks.
When did you realize this was what you wanted to do?
When I started my Master's, I studied databases and data modeling, and eventually took some Python courses. I began to realize the logical flow behind coding. With just a few lines of code, you can build anything by connecting one server or system with another. We are making magic in real life.
How did you know MK was a right fit for you?
MK feels like a family. Everyone is supportive and friendly. We are not just working; we are helping each other grow and develop.
Has anything surprised you while working here? Whether it be about yourself, MK Decision, the people you work with, or all 3.
I will always remember the first time I met Mostafa. He said, “welcome to the family”. I had never heard that when I joined a new company and felt so welcomed. I was surprised by this opportunity and how they believed in me and allowed me to take on responsibilities. After my first standup with the Engineering team, I felt blocked. I had messaged Har Rai, and he called me right away. He took his own time to patiently train me so I could understand and perform my job better. I had never experienced mentorship like this before.
What are some challenges you face in your current position, and how do you overcome them?
There is a lot to accomplish; my strategy is to list out all of my initiatives. I start by planning each step, prioritizing, and then executing from there.
Describe MK in one word
What is the most important thing you have learned at MK?
The importance of a “can-do attitude”. At MK, everyone is very respectful of differences and works together to support each other.
