After visiting San Diego throughout his adolescent years, Gustavo Romero chose San Diego to pursue his career in Marketing. Gustavo started at MK Decision as a Time for Experience “TFE” intern for the Marketing department and has grown in his role as MK’s Digital Media Specialist. Before his journey in the US, Gustavo was a member of the Mexican National Golf Team where he traveled across the globe, from Europe to China and across the United States to represent his country as a young athlete. Besides playing golf, Gustavo enjoys going to the beach, hiking with his new puppy, going out with friends, and watching award-winning films. In this month’s People Spotlight, we learn more about Gustavo, his role, and life at MK Decision.

What did you study in college?

I received a golf scholarship at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. Where I received a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) in Advertising Strategy.

Did you always want to go into Marketing?

Yes, advertising is the creative branch of marketing, they work together towards the same goal. Marketing is more on the sales and strategy side, while advertising focuses more on what you want people to feel when they think of your brand. My experience with advertising allows me to appeal to our viewers in our marketing campaigns and tug at their heartstrings.

What brought you to San Diego?

San Diego is my favorite city in the United States, so I always wanted to move here. Since I am in the United States on a F-1 visa, I am here on a limited timeline, and wanted to take advantage of the time I have left in the US and live here.

Why did you choose MK Decision?

I was impressed with MK’s products, but my interview truly won me over. My interview was with MK’s CEO, Har Rai, he came down to the lobby to greet me, his energy was infectious. MK was looking for someone with my skill set, so we were a natural match. At the time, MK was a small company, I have been here for over a year and have seen the company grow tremendously to the great company it is today. Being involved with a rising start-up is really cool because you are growing with the company and are able to wear many hats. Your opinion is valued by your department and across the company. You are not simply a 1 and a 0 in a huge company, you are someone that everyone knows and respects.

What is a day in the life of MK’s Digital Media Specialist?

My day is 50% creative and 50% analytical. Working on many creative executions for our brand, our products, our clients, and our company culture. These executions include videos, photography, animations, and more. The analytical side involves a lot of strategy, market research, creative briefs, media buying, and data analysis. Once you put each half together, you get fully integrated campaigns for different media channels.

What has your journey at MK been like?

Little by little, I have received more responsibilities. At first, I would do small executions, focusing mainly on social media, but now I have moved into analyzing data on MK’s website. Based on the data analytics, I generate reports that are able to influence the next phase of the website. All of my research allows us to strategize and plan our marketing campaigns. I have grown a lot professionally, from my supervisor checking in on each social media post, to now being the one to decide what will be featured on social media with my own strategy. It has been a great experience because I’ve seen the company grow from having a few clients to now working with hundreds of banks using our technology across the US.

What is your favorite part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is being able to create content. I am a videographer and really enjoy making videos, taking photographs, and embracing the creative side of the job.

What motivates you?

I am motivated by wanting to receive better results in my executions. I can easily create amazing videos but if I am not targeting the right audience, the content might not be relevant for them. Market research is a big part of my job, being able to understand MK’s target audience helps me advertise our products better.

What makes MK Decision different from other companies?

MK Decision is different from other companies because of the close relationships we have with the co-founders. It makes a big difference because it feels like you are working with friends, and makes you want to perform better.
